However, Donald Duck appears in most comic stories involving Scrooge. Only in the animated cartoons do they rarely meet. Thus, this distinction between universes is only relevant for the various animated cartoon series. It is non-existent in the comic books, which are the original medium for most of the characters. Carl Barks, who created Scrooge McDuck in 1947, wrote and drew numerous stories involving Donald Duck, his nephews and their wealthy Uncle Scrooge. This tradition was continued by various American artists and writers. When the Disney characters gained popularity in Europe, various European countries began to print their own Donald Duck magazines, reprinting American stories as well as producing their own.
