It is Minnesota''s smallest county by population.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 586 square miles (1,518 km²), of which 574 square miles (1,487 km²) is land and 12 square miles (31 km²) (2.03%) is water.As of the census] of 2000, there were 4,134 people, 1,717 households, and 1,129 families residing in the county. The population density was 7 people per square mile (3/km²). There were 2,199 housing units at an average density of 4 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.42% White, 0.02% Black or African American, 2.81% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 52.2% were of German, 13.0% Norwegian, 7.6% Swedish and 5.4% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000.
